My journey until now
Hello everyone!
This section is dedicated to letting you know a little bit more about myself, so please keep reading if you are interested :)
I am a 25 years old biomedical engineer from Italy and currently working as a PhD student at Trinity College Dublin under the supervision of professor Michael Monaghan.
My main research focus is on cardiac regeneration and in particular on developing a fully mature multicellular in vitro model on the human myocardium.
This model is often referred to as Engineered Heart Tissue (EHT) and it is made by a combination of biomaterials and cardiac cells to mimic the human heart.
In order to better recapitulate in vitro the human myocardium, different cells type will be included in the model. To obtain all the different cell types, I work with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which represent an unlimited source of any type of human cell needed for therapeutic purposes.
iPSCs can be differentiated into different cardiac cell types and in particular I am interested in:
cardiomyocytes
cardiac immune cells (for example macrophages)
cardiac fibroblasts
cardiac endothelial cells

Will I ever get over how cute this beating cardiomyocytes are?

Fluorescence lifetime microscopy (FLIM) will be applied to analyse the metabolic changes that occur during iPSCs differentiation and to confirm a fully mature phenotype is obtained.
